Statement by President Jonathan on presidential election 2015

Tuesday, March 31, 2015

Official statement by president Jonathan after the announcement of the results of presidential election
Fellow Nigerians,
I thank you all for turning out en-masse for the March 28 General Elections. I promised the country free and fair elections. I have kept my word. I have also expanded the space for Nigerians to participate in the democratic process. That is one legacy I will like to see endure.

Although some people have expressed mixed feelings about the results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), I urge those who may feel aggrieved to follow due process based on our constitution and our electoral laws, in seeking redress.

As I have always affirmed, nobody’s ambition is worth the blood of any Nigerian. The unity, stability and progress of our dear country is more important than anything else.

I congratulate all Nigerians for successfully going through the process of the March 28th General Elections with the commendable enthusiasm and commitment that was demonstrated nationwide.

I also commend the Security Services for their role in ensuring that the elections were mostly peaceful and violence-free.

To my colleagues in the PDP, I thank you for your support. Today, the PDP should be celebrating rather than mourning. We have established a legacy of democratic freedom, transparency, economic growth and free and fair elections.

For the past 16 years, we have steered the country away from ethnic and regional politics. We created a Pan-Nigerian political party and brought home to our people the realities of economic development and social transformation.

Through patriotism and diligence, we have built the biggest and most patriotic party in Nigerian history. We must stand together as a party and look to the future with renewed optimism.

I thank all Nigerians once again for the great opportunity I was given to lead this country and assure you that I will continue to do my best at the helm of national affairs until the end of my tenure.

I have conveyed my personal best wishes to General Muhammadu Buhari.

May God Almighty continue to bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

I thank you all.

Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR

President,

Federal Republic of Nigeria

PDP Calls for Cancellation of Election Results in Kano

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kano State chapter, has called for the cancellation of results of Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly elections in the state.
This is contained in a petition signed by the party’s Secretary, Alhaji Auwalu Danzabuwa, and made available to newsmen in Kano on Monday.
“The PDP hereby protests the way, manner and procedure adopted by your commission in the conduct of the above exercise. The party hereby demands the cancellation of the election in its totality in Kano State,” stated that the petition.
The party said that the number of votes in many of the polling units exceeded the number of accredited voters as captured in the card reader and manual accreditation.
“We hereby put forward the following as examples, Gurjiya Cikin Gari Polling Unit (006), Dagumawa Cikin Gari Polling Unit (007) and Dagumawa Bayan Sakateriya (004).’’
The petition also alleged that many voters were deliberately denied the right to vote by APC supporters.
It alleged that the commission in some areas did not provide adequate number of ballot papers needed at the polling units and other voting materials at Dawakin Tofa Local Government.
According to the petition, Dawakin Tofa and Rimin Gado local governments received 40,000 and 15, 000 ballot papers respectively.
It said that the figure was short of the number needed to conduct free and fair election in the areas.
“In addition, a car Renault model belonging to one Alhaji Bilya of Bachirawa Quarters was loaded with APC thumb-printed ballot papers; the case was reported to Bachirawa Police Division. Violent conduct by APC members chased out eligible voters from polling units and stuffing of ballot papers, thump printed by APC agents while INEC officials were made to endorse some under duress,” the petition alleged.

Students run helter-skelter as bomb rumour hits Ogun School

bomb_logo_feat
There was palpable fear Monday morning as students of the Ogun State School of Nursing, Ilaro in the Yewa South local government area of the state ran helter-skelter after receiving news of an impending bomb blast.
It was gathered that unknown persons had gone to write boldly in front of the school that all the students must leave the school premises as insurgents will be striking tonight in the school.
According to one of the students, who pleaded anonymity, most of the students, upon getting the information have left the town for their various homes.
It was gathered that the notice read,”Bomb in rampage. You should leave the school before 12:00 as we are going to throw bomb by then”
Most of the students who spoke with newsmen confirmed the incident but pleaded to our newsmen not to write their names in print.
One of the students, who simply identified herself as ‘Daz’, explained that the students did not want to take any risk following the threat by unknown persons, noting that, in every rumour, there is an iota of truth”.
According to her: “We don’t want to be caught unaware, no one can say for now if its true. It is better we heed to the advice for now and put our nose on the ground to see that there is no problem before we return to school.
“Though, the school authority has not taken any categorical step about the matter, the Chibok experience is there for us to learn from, so we are not bothered about whether they act or not, we have decided to leave.
“Also, our hostel fence was demolished and no one is saying anything about that. Now, we have been exposed to a very high risk, anybody cannot just enter our hostel and do whatever he or she likes and move out without questioning.
“We have reported to the school authority but it seems they are not ready to do anything about that for now, so with the latest bomb information, I’m on my way to Lagos to meet my family until I got positive news that all is well,” she stated.
It was later gathered that some of the students had gone to the Ilato Police station this morning to lodge complain and the DPO has ordered some policemen to follow them for on the spot assessment and to investigate the matter very well.

Military aids electoral fraud –Okorocha

March 31, 2015 : Chuks Ohai

Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha
The Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, has frowned on the way the Peoples Democratic Party “rigged” the elections of Saturday and has therefore called for the outright cancellation of the results in six local government areas of the state.
He also said that the election in the state was full of combined conspiracy with military intervention.
The governor, who addressed journalists on Monday at the Government House, Owerri, accused notable chieftains of the PDP in the state of using the military to terrorise voters.
He alleged that such areas as Oru East, Ohaji/Egbema, Ngor Okpala, Aboh Mbaise and parts of Owerri West did not only witnessed unprecedented rigging but also abduction and kidnapping of agents of rival political parties who were manhandled and forced to lie prostrate on the ground by soldiers acting on the orders of the Federal Government.
He said, “Armed soldiers were used by the PDP as aides to the collation officers and there was no collation of results at the ward levels as prescribed by the Electoral Act. All the collating officers and presiding officers were directed to go and submit their results at the LG level, from where they collected all the results from the booths in the presence of soldiers.”
Okorocha also lashed out at security agents who he alleged barred agents of the opposition parties from entering into the INEC office while giving those of the PDP unfettered access to the premises of the electoral commission.
The governor also said that 250 students of the Rochas Foundation College who duly registered for the election and were issued with PVC, were arrested and held hostage at Ogboko on what he called trumped-up charges and were prevented from voting by soldiers working for the PDP.
“Most of these helpless children are orphans and I am their father, they duly registered for the election but soldiers arrested, humiliated and detained them without food and water and they were not released until the following day being Sunday.”
Okorocha insisted that election did not take place in the Isiala Mbano area and parts of Aboh Mbaise. He expressed shock that results were still announced in these areas by INEC.
The governor also denied allegations of tearing result sheets and added that his convoy was shot at by security agents during which one of the boys in his entourage was seriously wounded and immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri.

My brother Timothy moved about 5 steps forward and all I could see was a black Jeep, Nissan Sunny and a Toyota Camery, the next thing I saw was that the driver slowed down and then they started shooting. Election results collated in private houses, hotels –APC

March 30, 2015 : Stanley Opara

Ngige
The All Progressives Congress in Anambra State has accused the Peoples Democratic Party of using residential houses, hotels and other secret places for collation of electoral results.
The party also said that most of the legitimate collation centres were left empty without any sign of electoral activities.
The senator representing Anambra Central and who is also seeking reelection, Dr. Chris Ngige, who spoke for members of the party in Awka on Sunday, said powerful persons in the state had held on to the results of the elections, hence the delay in announcement of electoral results.
He also said results sheets were also not made available at the centres.
Ngige, who called for the outright cancellation of elections in the state, said to further compound the situation, the number of people accredited and expected to vote during Saturday’s election at different polling stations were not made public by INEC officials.
“In some places, the accreditation was done alongside the voting proper. People voted as many times as possible,” he alleged.
According to Ngige, the accreditation was done with a view to manipulating the results, adding that in most places, the fingers of voters were not inked.
He said names of voters were being written on fresh sheets of paper during the accreditation, which gave room for serious manipulation.
He said over 200 policemen were accompanied by some PDP stalwarts to some local government areas with the intention of forcing electoral officers to sign blank result sheets.
But speaking to our correspondent in an interview on Sunday, the Residential Electoral Commissioner, Anambra State, Mr. Edwin Nwatarali, said no report had been brought to him showing that fingers were not inked during the elections.
He said the commission had to move collation centres from troubled zones to other collation centres that were peaceful after a clash occurred on Sunday in one of the collation centres.
He said threats to lives of INEC personnel and materials had been reported to him, and the situation was under control.

President-elect to emerge today –Jega

March 30, 2015 :
INEC Chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega
The Independent National Electoral Commission has said that despite the extension of Saturday’s elections till Sunday in some parts of the country, the results of the presidential poll will be declared on Monday(today).
INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, gave the assurance   as some of results from wards, local government areas and states continued to emerge on Sunday.
For instance, results from Osun and Ogun states showed the All Progressives Congress Presidential candidate, Maj.Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, defeating President Goodluck Jonathan.
But in Ekiti State, Jonathan had an easy ride as he beat the APC candidate.
Jega, who gave journalists an update on the conduct of the polls in Abuja, said that as of Sunday evening, results of the elections had only been completely collated in two states, one of which was Ekiti.
He said, “Some people assume that when I said 48 hours( for the release of the results), it starts from the morning the elections commenced. It is 48 hours after elections have ended, like yesterday(Saturday).
“You start counting 48 hours from yesterday (Saturday) when substantial majority of the polling units ended elections.”
The INEC chief expressed satisfaction over the conduct of the   polls, which he said held in a substantial number of polling units across the country, including the troubled North-East zone   where   internally displaced persons   voted in   Adamawa, Yobe and Borno states.
“We are pleased that the elections went on smoothly in a substantial number of polling units across the country, including the North-East where the commission was also able to conduct voting for Internally Displaced Persons in the three states of Adamawa, Yobe and Borno,” Jega said.
He said that out of more than   150,000 card readers used for the conduct of the polls , only 300   failed, representing   about 0.25 per cent of the total number of machines.
“It is also gratifying to note that the card readers worked well in the majority of polling units, even though there were areas where difficulties experienced necessitated additional guidelines to allow for manual accreditation of voters, as announced yesterday (Saturday),” Jega said.
He stated that manual accreditation was done in some polling units in   Osun, Kebbi, Ekiti, Adamawa, Borno, Jigawa, Anambra, Akwa Ibom and Ebonyi states.”
Jega said the elections were extended and   concluded on Sunday in nine states and the Federal Capital Territory.
Taraba State has the highest number of 116 polling units where the polls were extended.
Other states where the number of polling units where the elections were extended are Lagos (90), Kebbi (16), Adamawa (25), Niger (six ), Yobe (37), Borno (eight), Jigawa (37), Kano (13) and FCT (two).
He also rejected the claim by the spokesman for the PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation,   Femi Fani-Kayode, that his party had won in certain number of states.
Jega, who said Fani-Kayode should be asked the source of his figures, stated that as of the time he was addressing the journalists on Sunday evening, collation had only been concluded in two states. He said that   the results from the two had yet to arrive Abuja in the manner that it could be announced.
The chairman said, “You said somebody in one of the parties said the PDP is winning in 23 states. I don’t know the sources of his information. I know result have not been collated in 23 states.
“May be you should direct the questions to him and let him explain.”
He   advised journalists “to be careful about reporting this kind of information that is being put out there by people who are clearly partisan.”
He also debunked speculation that he was under pressure to declare results of the presidential election inconclusive.
“We are not under any pressure to declare inconclusive elections. In fact, I wonder who will be interested in declaring the election inconclusive. I think candidates will be interested in being declared winners and not to have the election declared inconclusive,” Jega said.
The INEC boss said his office had on Sunday morning received petitions from the APC in Rivers State calling for outright cancellation of the elections   in the state.
He assured the petitioners that the commission would consider all the complaints, including the allegation of presence of some underage voters and substitution of some members of the commission’s ad hoc staff with untrained partisan persons in Rivers and Lagos states.
However, results from Osun State showed that Buhari recorded   victory in 22 out of the 24 Local Government Areas   so far announced by the state INEC. He had 264,734 votes.
Jonathan, who won the remaining LGAs – Ife Central and Ife East – scored 192,288 votes.
The   results were announced in Osogbo by the returning officers for each of the LGAs on Sunday.
Also in Ogun State, the APC presidential candidate defeated Jonathan in 13 out of the 20 LGAs whose results were announced by INEC.
He polled 308, 290 votes while Jonathan scored 207,950 votes.
The APC candidate for the Ogun Central Senatorial District,   Lanre Tejuoso, defeated   PDP’s Abisola Sodipo-Clark, the wife of an Ijaw national leader, Edwin Clark.
Tejuoso scored 115, 197 votes while Sodipo-Clark had 30,036 votes. The sitting senator for Ogun Central and Social Democratic Party’s candidate, Olugbenga Obadara, got 15,124 votes.
Jonathan, however, had it easy in Ekiti State where he polled 176,466 votes from 16 councils in the state. Buhari garnered 120,331 votes.
The result was announced by the state Returning Officer, Prof. Adebiyi Daramola, to party officials on Sunday.
It was also a sweet victory for the PDP as it won all the three senatorial and six House of Representatives seats in the state.
Impliedly, by implication two of the APC   senators – Anthony Adeniyi and Olubunmi Adetumbi – who contested the poll   will not join their colleagues in the eight National   Assembly.
Gbenga Olofin, the third APC candidate for Ekiti Central was defeated by Fatimat Raji-Rasaki, wife of a former Lagos State military administrator, Brig.-Gen. Raji Rasaki of the PDP.
Those elected for the House of Representatives seats are Kehinde Agboola, Ayotunde Oladimeji, Thaddeus Aina, Olamide Oni, Akin Awodumila and Segun Adekola.
In Kogi State, Buhari was leading by polling 108,817 votes from six LGAs as against Jonathan’s 84,555 in five LGAs.
The APC candidate also won in Dekina, the LGA of Governor Idris Wada with 18, 819 votes to Jonathan’s 13,885 votes. He also won in Amadu Alli’s LGA of Idah with 10,445 votes to Jonathan’s 6,113.
But there was a mild tension in parts of Imo State on Sunday as armed officials of the Department of State Services, the Police and the Army barred journalists from collation centres in the state.
At the collation centre in Owerri Municipal Council Secretariat, journalists were turned back from the gate by stern looking security operatives who asked them to go back   and wait until the results were announced.
All efforts to reach the Resident Electoral Commissioner, George Ada, were abortive as his telephone was switched off.

Jonathan takes the lead in Imo

March 30, 2015 : Chux

The results of the presidential election in 11 out of the 27 local government areas in Imo State collated on Sunday in Owerri, capital of the state, show that President Goodluck Jonathan, who is the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, is clearly leading his main opponent, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Major-Gen Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).
The collated results were from Ideato North, Isiala-Mbaino, Isu, Obowo, Ohaji-Egbema,. Okigwe, Owerri Municipal, Owerri West, Nwangene, Oru East and Ideato South LGAs.
Jonathan polled a total of  210,022 votes to grab the lead ahead of Buhari, who had 50,977  votes.
The latter won in Ideato South, Governor Rochas Okorocha’s home LGA, by 12, 128 votes as against Jonathan’s 6,406 votes.

PDP, APC clash over Lagos poll results delay

The agent of the Peoples Democratic Party for the presidential election collation in Lagos State, Mr. Wahab Owokoniran, and his All Progressives Congress counterpart, Senator Tokunbo Afikuyomi, on Monday morning hotly disagreed during the collation exercise at the Independent National Electoral Commission Lagos office.
The quarrel began immediately the Collation Officer for Lagos State, Prof. Isaac Adewole, announced the suspension of the collation of the presidential poll till 8am.
Before Adewole suspended the collation of the result at 1.48am, electoral officers of four local government areas had submitted the results of their respective council areas, while the results for the remaining 16 local government areas had yet to be returned to the INEC office.
But immediately after Adewole, who is the Vice Chancellor,  University of Ibadan, announced the suspension of the collation of the result, Owokoniran flared up and protested the decision, asking the state collation officer to explain the rationale behind the shift.
Owokoniran raised issues concerning non-arrival of the result of the election that was conducted on Saturday.
He said the result ought to have been brought to the INEC office.
According to him, result of many polling units, where PDP won, were manipulated in favour of APC.
Owokoniran also alleged that election did not take place in no fewer than 30 polling units in Epe Local Government Area of the state and yet result was declared for them.
“In some local government areas, election had been concluded two days ago. What could have delayed the collation? I suspect there are some discrepancies somewhere.
“We will not accept any result different from the one we have,” he said.
Owokoniran, however, submitted two petitions to the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr. Akin Orebiyi, questioning the electoral body’s collation process.
But Afikuyomi dismissed the claim, saying only INEC had the authority to announce the result of any election.
He asked Owokoniran to speak by facts, rather than making issues that could generate controversy.
Describing himself as one of those who framed the Electoral Act, Afikuyomi said, “Before we begin to make allegations about results being tampered with, without any substantial evidence or a single shred of fact, I think we must speak to facts and records.
“For instance, with regard to the result for Apapa Local Government Area, I have issues, but I will wait for us to get there. I think we watch the way we make claims because it can have serious implications.”

Press statement from the PDP. Read below…
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has charged Nigerians to totally disregard misleading figures being circulated by the APC in the social media as results of the Presidential and National Assembly elections in some polling booths.
PDP National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh in a statement on Sunday said the figures were “fake and do not represented the true results which are currently being collated by INEC, the only body authorized to release and announce results”.
“The APC in its desperation for power has resorted to posting fake results in the social media in a bid to ambush the electoral commission, mislead the unsuspecting public to believe it is winning, all in furtherance of its grand plot to cause confusion and set the stage for violence when the authentic results are finally released.
“We therefore alert Nigerians to be on their guard and close ranks in resisting the APC’s plot to plunge the nation into chaos and anarchy.  Our democracy has come to stay and the will of the people must prevail over and above the parochial ambition of a selfish few.
“Finally, we strongly caution the APC against its acts of desperation and use of dishonest methods including physical attacks against our members and supporters as these pose great threat to our democracy, the unity and stability of our dear nation.

APC, PDP go head-to-head in Benue, results inconclusive

March 29, 2015 : John A

There were signs on Sunday that the results of the Presidential and National Assembly elections might drag till Monday in Benue State.
Findings showed that apart from the slow collation process, voting was still in progress in areas that could not vote on Saturday due to hitches.
In Zone ‘C’ for instance, where the Senate President, David Mark, of the Peoples Democratic Party hails from, only three out of the nine local government areas have been collated fully.
Unconfirmed results indicate that so far, President Goodluck Jonathan and Mark are leading in the zone.
In Zone ‘B’, where the Senate Minority Leader, George Akume, comes from, the All Progressives Congress is leading in the seven local government areas with a clear margin, though not all of them have been officially verified.
In Makurdi Local Government Area, and state capital, where there are 11 wards, only four have been verified.
However, in Zone ‘A’ where the state Governor, Mr. Gabriel Suswam, and Senator  Barnabas Gemade, are contesting the senate seat, only one local government area out of seven have been collated.
However, the two parties are fighting head-to-head in the zone.

Gunmen storm polling unit in Bauchi, set election materials ablaze

2015-election
Unidentified gunmen, Saturday attacked a polling unit in Bagurun Primary School of Darazo local government area of Bauchi state, firing gunshots sporadically into the air.
According to a statement signed by the spokesman of the Bauchi State Police Command, DSP Haruna Mohammed, the gunmen arrived at the place in six vehicles and thereafter gathered all election materials and set some of them ablaze.
“The timely intervention of combined security forces, comprising the Police and Army, forced the suspects to abandon their mission and escape to unknown destination,” News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported Mohammed to have said in the statement.
“This enabled the electorate to put off the fire and save both the sensitive and non-sensitive materials.
“Normalcy was restored in the area and the electorate continued casting their votes unhindered under tight security,” he said.
Mohammed also confirmed the arrest of a 24-year-old man, Abdul Umar, who was found loitering around Katako ward of Warji town in the state with a locally made pistol.
Abdullahi Samaila and Nasiru Adamu who were found in possession of 29 permanent voter cards (PVCs) at Marga Primary School Polling Unit of Ganjuwa local government area were also arrested.
Unknown persons also snatched INEC Smart Card Reader machine and some election materials at Jauro Gani Village Polling Unit of Alkaleri local government area of the state.

‘PDP shared money at my polling unit’

Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode
The All Progressives Congress governorship candidate in Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, says President Goodluck Jonathan was able to get 71 votes at his (Ambode’s) polling unit at Ward A5, polling unit 03, Epe, because members of the Peoples Democratic Party distributed cash.
He, however, expressed pleasure in the fact that the APC presidential candidate, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd), got 97 votes.
He said, “Some PDP people distributed cash at my polling unit, but they still failed. Hopefully, subsequent elections will be different as people become more enlightened.”
Ambode said the process of accreditation went smoothly in his area.
The PDP Lagos Chairman, Capt. Tunji Shelle, however, said Ambode was making a baseless accusation because he was afraid of losing the April 11 governorship election.
He said, “Who are the people who shared the money? Ambode knows that he will lose in the governorship poll. He should come forward with proofs.”

Nurses bring sick 85-year-old voter to polling booth

Dr. Adebisi Sebanjo
Ailing 85-year-old Dr. Adebisi Sebanjo, caused a stir on Saturday after he arrived at the polling unit at Doula, Apapa, Lagos State.
The octogenarian medical director of Julisam Hospital was assisted by two young female nurses wearing blue uniforms.
Adebisi is the father of the Senior Special Adviser on Poverty Alleviation to Governor Babatunde Fashola, Idowu Sebanjo.
The aged doctor could not speak with our correspondent. The nurses said he “has little or no strength to talk.’’
But he was not the only aged person who came out to vote on Saturday.
Many other old people turned out to cast their votes for candidates of their choice despite many challenges the exercises posed.
Those who spoke with SUNDAY PUNCH said they came out to ensure that the country remained united and to set good example to the younger generation.
According to 89-year-old Dr. Abimbola Silva ─ mother of Nollywood actress, Joke Silva ─ voting was her fundamental right.
Silva, who was in a wheelchair, said, “It is my right to vote. By doing this I am laying a good example for the younger generation. The exercise has been ok,” she said.
Another aged voter, Mr. Oyedele Oyelade, 78, expressed delight at being able to cast his vote despite waiting till about 4pm to be accredited.
The duo of Musa Mohammed and Ibrahim Alilu, aged 75 and 80 respectively, told SUNDAY PUNCH that they wanted the country to get better.
Also at the Doula polling unit to vote was Mr. Adamu Zaria, a blind 65-year-old man.
“Though I am blind, I know who I want to vote for. I am a Nigerian. I have hope that Nigeria will become better,” he said.

Boko Haram beheads 23, set home on fire in Buratai

boko haram gombe

Suspected Boko Haram gunmen beheaded 23 people and set fire to homes in Buratai, northeast Nigeria, on the eve of Saturday’s general elections, a federal lawmaker representing the area told AFP.
“There was an attack on Buratai late Friday by gunmen suspected to be insurgents….They beheaded 23 people and set homes on fire,” said Mohammed Adamu, who represents the town some 200 kilometres (125 miles) from Borno’s capital Maiduguri.
“At least half the village has been burnt,” he added.
A nurse at the nearest major hospital, in Biu, said the 32 injured who were receiving care also reported that many were decapitated during the attack.
Further details of the violence were not immediately available, but the attack is consistent with Boko Haram’s past strikes in the area in the south of the state, where defenceless civilians have been repeatedly targeted.
It was not clear if the raid late Friday was linked to Saturday’s polls, but Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau had vowed to disrupt the vote.
Elsewhere in Nigeria’s restive northeast, suspected Islamist militants killed at least seven people in separate attacks in the Gombe state.
Witnesses reported that the assailants in Gombe made clear their intention was to disrupt the polls.

Polls: Army, police tighten security

Some riot policemen.
Soldiers and riot policemen are on some highways in the North Central,   Osun and Kaduna States with just three days to the presidential and National Assembly elections.
The security personnel are   seen searching vehicles, forcing motorists and travellers to spend longer hours on the roads.
Findings by The PUNCH show that the security checks are intensified as more residents flee from the North over fear of post-election violence.
The fleeing residents, who are leaving states like Kano, Kaduna, Bauchi, Gombe and Plateau are heading southwards.
Our correspondent, who passed through the Abuja-Keffi-Akwanga-Lafia-Guma-Makurdi routes on Tuesday (yesterday) learnt that additional security checkpoints and men had been deployed in the last couple of days.
A journey of about three hours from Abuja to Makurdi, Benue State in normal times, took close to six hours on Tuesday due to the heavy security presence.
An officer at one of the checkpoints on the highways said, “Political tension has built up everywhere and politicians are looking for ways to outdo one another.
“Security agencies have a responsibility to prevent any act likely to lead to a breach of public peace.
“At times like this, you don’t rule out the possibility of hired persons transporting arms and other dangerous weapons. So, it is better to prevent than lament later.”
The officer   added that people were travelling to the South over fear that “something ugly could happen during or after the elections.”
He stated, “Despite all the assurances given to them not to flee, some continue to do so.
“This has been a daily occurrence, but we keep assuring them that nothing will happen.”
One of the fleeing people,   Godwin Nzeagu, told one of our correspondents that he would “never” allow what happened to him after the 2011 presidential poll to recur.
Nzeagu, a textile dealer, who hails from Anambra State, claimed that he escaped death by a whisker when rampaging youths attacked his business premises in 2011 soon after the results of the elections were declared.
“All these assurances do not give any guarantee that you are safe. You can’t tell what will cause the mayhem,” he said.
In Lafia,   Nasarawa State, operatives of the Department of State Services are seen patrolling the town with lethal weapons in an apparent ‘show of force.’
The DSS operatives wear the service’ black vests with DSS boldly printed on the back.
In Osogbo and Ede in Osun State, many residents   woke up on Tuesday   to see the soldiers stopping and searching motorists.
A resident, Segun Adeyemi, said the presence of the armed soldiers on Ilobu Road in Osogbo caused panic among them.
Although he explained that the soldiers did not harass anybody, he said he had thought that policemen would be used to carry out such task since a court had restrained the Federal Government from deploying soldiers for the polls.
It was gathered that some soldiers, who were also deployed in Akoda in Ede, caused traffic snarl with their checkpoints on Tuesday.
Efforts to speak to the Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Army Engineering Construction Regiment, Ede, Capt. O. Olaoluwa, proved abortive.
Calls put across to his telephone were not answered and a text message sent to him was also not responded to.
But the APC in the state has criticised the Federal Government for disobeying   the   High Court order barring the deployment of soldiers for the elections.
The spokesperson for the APC in the state, Kunle Oyatomi, said   in a statement on Tuesday that the Federal Government   planned to use the military to harass and arrest APC leaders on the eve of the elections.
The statement read, “President Goodluck Jonathan has a duty to respect the law, otherwise his apparent disregard of court orders in the run-up to presidential and general elections will constitute the greatest threat yet to the survival of democracy in Nigeria.
‘‘From the look of things in Osun, regarding the deployment of soldiers for the election, it would appear that President Jonathan has no intention whatsoever to respect the series of Federal High Court-rulings, not to deploy soldiers for the conduct of March 28 and April 11 elections.
“Soldiers were sighted yesterday in some parts of the state. The Federal Government’s led Peoples Democratic Party planned to use the military to harass, arrest APC leaders on the eve of the elections as they did last August when over 700 APC leaders and members arrested and locked up in detention on the eve of the governorship election.
“If President Jonathan goes ahead to disregard the legal position on this matter as articulated in several Federal High Courts across the country, that would be worst contempt for the law, exhibited by any Nigerian head of state or President ever. The consequences for our fledgling democracy will be catastrophic.
“Jonathan should act in honourable manner like a Christian   he claims to be by respecting the law, otherwise, he would be considered not better than the like of Mobutu Sese Seko of Congo and Idi Amin of Uganda, both of whom had the greatest disregard and disrespect for their countries’ laws and brought grief, that still resonates today.”
Also soldiers bave been deployed in areas considered as ‘flashpoints’ in Kaduna State.
The soldiers were seen by one of our correspondents     erecting makeshift tents at the LEA Primary School Malali, St. Rita’s Catholic Church, Unguwn Yaro; Unguwan Kudu, Unguwan Sunday and Rigachukun areas of the state.
At Mando Motor Park, Hayin Banki and the Western Bypass, men of the Nigerian Air Force have been stationed in there.
One of the men, who spoke on condition of anonymity said that they were on “special duty.”
The police in the state have also intensified patrol of the metropolis and areas such as Alkali Road, NEPA Roundabout, Golf Course Road and Isa Kaita Junction. They   have stationed their patrol vehicles at the Police College/Constitution Road in Barnawa.
